The ravanhattha, an instrument played by the bhopas of Rajasthan as they sing and tell the stories of a deity, is best classified as a/an:

  1. Idiophone
  2. Membranophone
  3. Aerophone
  4. Electrophone
  5. Chordophone

That was just one of many questions posed to high school students from 24 district campuses as they competed in the Super Quiz at the Dallas ISD District Academic Decathlon competition on Nov. 14 at Seagoville High School.

The theme focused on India, with students engaged in friendly competition testing their knowledge in music, art, economics, math, language arts, science and social science.

Schools competed in three divisions—small, medium or large school. Students were grouped according to academic performance—“A” students competed in the Honors category; “B” students made up the Scholastic category; and “C” students competed in the Varsity category.

The teams with the highest overall scores advanced to the regional competitions January 29-30.

The team from David W. Carter High School earned its first appearance in regionals and advanced in the small school category along with the team from L.G. Pinkston High School.

Other teams advancing are:

Medium school category – Seagoville, Moises E. Molina, Bryan Adams, H. Grady Spruce, North Dallas, Emmett J. Conrad, and Hillcrest high schools.

Large school category – School for the Talented and Gifted and School of Science and Engineering at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, W.T. White High School, School of Health Professions at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, and Dr. Wright Lassiter Early College High School.

Super Quiz winners are:

First place (tie) – Hillcrest High School and Rangel

Second place (tie) – South Oak Cliff and Conrad high schools
