Walnut Hill Elementary gets big donation from recent home tour

Thanks to proceeds from the Modern Mile home tour held in early October, the Walnut Hill Neighborhood Association presented a $22,352 check to Walnut Hill Elementary School on Nov. 2.

The neighborhood association hosted Modern Mile Dallas, which spotlighted mid-century and architecturally significant modern homes in the Walnut Hill neighborhood, as a fundraiser for the district school. The proceeds will help fund Walnut Hill Elementary School’s sensory garden, which will support the school’s autism program, as well as a butterfly garden. The improvements come as the school celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

“We value our relationship with the community,” said Chase McLaurin, principal of Walnut Hill Elementary School. “When I became principal here, we started developing this relationship with the neighborhood association. I was excited about this opportunity to get them involved at Walnut Hill.”

Proceeds from the home tour exceeded original expectations of $15,000. The neighborhood association sold more than 1,000 tickets to the event.

In addition to the money raised from the home tour, the neighborhood association secured donated labor to landscape the proposed gardens and negotiated a reduced cost for necessary materials for the project.

“We are definitely planning to do this (home tour) on a yearly basis,” said Kathy Adcock-Smith, founder of Modern Mile Dallas. “And it will always benefit Walnut Hill (Elementary School) as long as we do the tour.”
