Harry Stone Montessori Academy: Two programs achieve excellence

0

We are one Harry Stone, and as one, we all succeed. That’s the motto that guides students and staff at this unique campus south of downtown Dallas. Offering a Montessori prekindergarten through 5 program coupled with the International Baccalaureate MYP (Middle Years Program) 6-8, Harry Stone Montessori Academy provides an exceptional learning environment for each student.

To add to the school’s many accomplishments, Stone is a nominee for the 2015 National Blue Ribbon School award sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious honor is only bestowed upon schools deemed to be among the best schools in the nation that are closing the achievement gaps among students.

Grounded in a rich legacy of excellence, Stone has served generations of families who have carried that spirit of accomplishment and excellence with them in everything they do, and some have even found their way back to the halls of their beloved alma mater.

“Multiple generations of families have matriculated through HSMA,” Principal Aretha Brooks said.  “We are honored to have some of those former HSMA students as members of our current faculty and staff.”

Although Stone offers two distinct programs, the school prides itself on never losing sight of who they are and, more important, who they serve—students.

“Whether it is collaborative learning and planning in the IB curriculum framework, the inherent peer mentoring model of the Montessori classroom, or our Middle School Student Safety Patrol as they assist elementary students at parent drop-off each morning, the one Harry Stone spirit can be experienced in some way on our campus every day,” Brooks said.

With a student body of more than 500, Stone has a highly accomplished repertoire of performing arts programs. These include: theater arts, orchestra, piano and choir, offered to the lower elementary students as well as the middle school level.

The school is committed to integrating language acquisition as an integral part of the culture, with three language classes in Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese.

“The thing I like most about being here is that the teachers are really understanding and committed to helping us,” said theater student Julian Dixon. “They’re also really organized and let you know exactly what they expect from you. I really like it a lot.”

The National Blue Ribbon Schools are scheduled to be announced later this month.
