North Texas Giving Day urges community to open wallets for worthy causes

There are 26 million reasons why the Communities Foundation of Texas wants this year’s North Texas Giving Day to be successful.

That’s how many dollars the campaign collected from 75,000 donations last year, with money going to area nonprofit organizations. A number of the nonprofits support Dallas ISD students and schools. This is the seventh year for the regional campaign, and the goal is to surpass last year’s total.

From 6 a.m. to midnight on Thursday, Sept. 17, the more than 2,100 certified nonprofits listed on the website will accept individual donations of $25 or more. Donating is simple and can be done via www.northtexasgivingday.org. Users may select which organizations they wish to support.

There are also “Donation Station” events throughout the day. The Dallas County Donation Station is set for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday at NorthPark Center, and it will feature performances and the second-annual KidsGive drive, which encourages children to donate their spare change and offers kid-friendly activities.

The North Texas Giving Day website features a countdown clock ticking down to the big day, and it will also keep a running tally of the number of gifts received and the total amounts raised.

“North Texas Giving Day is a day of celebration here in North Texas. Certainly it is for the nonprofits, some of whose years are made in a single day from the generosity of tens of thousands of donors,” said Brent Christopher, Communities Foundation of Texas president and CEO, and North Texas Giving Day founder. “We can’t wait to see what unfolds this year.”
