TAG again named best high school in United States

The School for the Talented and Gifted at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center (TAG) has been named the best high school in the nation for the fourth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report.

TAG was joined in the top 10 of the annual rankings by the School for Science and Engineering, which earned the No. 5 spot. Overall, 13 Dallas ISD campuses, including six based at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, received gold, silver or bronze medals in the magazine’s Best High Schools rankings.

The School for the Talented and Gifted at Townview also earned the magazine’s top honor in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Principal Benjamin Mackey said the honor reflects the top-notch college preparation that takes place at the school.

“This honor is an indication that our school provides rigorous, purposeful coursework and a supportive environment continue to provide our students with the skills and mindsets necessary to write their own futures,” Mackey said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our passionate staff, inquisitive students, and supportive parents and community.”

The following schools earned the “gold medal” designation for demonstrating the highest college readiness, placing them among the top 500 in the nation. (** Denotes the school is based at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center):

  • Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School – No. 75 (No. 12 in Texas) in the nation
  • Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts – No. 127 in the nation (No. 25 in Texas)
  • Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet** – No. 170 in the nation (No. 33 in Texas)
  • School of Health Professions** – No. 270 in the nation (No. 43 in Texas)
  • Rosie M. Collins Sorrells School of Education and Social Services** – No. 287 in the nation (No. 44 in Texas)
  • School of Business and Management** – No. 448 in the nation (No. 53 in Texas)

One Dallas ISD campus earned a “silver medal” for high performance with college readiness below the gold medal level:

  • Trinidad “Trini” Garza Early College – No. 1,003 in the nation – (No. 104 in Texas)

The following Dallas ISD campuses earned a “bronze medal” in the rankings:

  • Maceo Smith New Tech High School
  • Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy
  • Barack Obama Male Leadership
  • Middle College High School

U.S. News & World Report’s ranking methodology of high schools is the following principles: “that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show it is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.” To learn more about the ranking methodology, click here.
