Students flex their (brain) muscles at April 25 Pentathlon

0

Typically, Saturday mornings are for catching up on much needed sleep. However, for middle school students who participated in the Region XII seventh- and eighth-grade Pentathlon this past weekend, Saturday was all about academics.

The morning started with individual competitions as students tested their knowledge in literature, math, science, and social studies. When it came down to the fine arts category, students intently listened as music flowed through the P.A. system, challenging them to recall music history facts. After all the individual categories were complete and scores tallied, students placing 1st through 3rd earned medals and helped boost their school’s overall Pentathlon scores.

The top overall schools were:

7th grade:

  • Harry Stone Montessori Academy (1st)
  • William B. Travis Academy (2nd)
  • Dallas Environmental Science Academy (3rd)

8th grade:

  • Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School (1st)
  • Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (2nd)
  • Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy (3rd)

After the individual competitions, students gathered with their classmates to flex their brain muscles in the popular Super Quiz exhibition event where teams competed in honors, scholastics or varsity categories.

The top Super Quiz teams were:

7th grade:

  • E. D. Walker Middle School (1st)
  • William B. Travis (2nd)
  • Ann Richards (3rd)

8th grade:

  • Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School (1st)
  • Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (2nd)
  • Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy (3rd)

Other middle schools that participated included: W.H. Atwell, Billy Earl Dade, W.H. Gaston, W.E. Greiner, John B. Hood, Harold W. Lang, Rosemont, and T.J. Rusk.
