Superintendent’s scholarship event honors 65 high school seniors

Seniors representing every comprehensive and magnet high school in Dallas ISD were recognized for academic excellence and received a share of $155,000 in scholarships at the 2015 Superintendent’s Scholarship Reception held Tuesday, April 21, at Emmett Conrad High School.

Superintendent Mike Miles, members of the board of trustees, and the district’s Counselor of the Year, Yolanda Velasquez Cortes, congratulated the scholars and encouraged them to continue their commitment to education as they leave for college. The students were selected by their school scholarship committees to receive $2,500 scholarships based on academic achievement, community service, and recommendations. Since its inception in 2000, the Superintendent’s Scholarship Fund has provided more than $2.2 million in scholarships to 962 district students, primarily from the proceeds of an annual scholarship golf tournament. This year, the Superintendent’s Scholarship Run, which will take place Saturday, May 16, at Woodrow Wilson High School, takes the place of the scholarship golf tournament.

Director of Counseling Services, Dr. Sylvia Lopez, presented three additional seniors with $10,000 scholarships funded by a donation from the Sulentic Family Foundation. The seniors, who were selected from a field of 300 applicants based on academic achievement, essays, letters of recommendation and financial need, are:

  • Sung Mawi, Emmett J. Conrad High School
  • Alfredo Ramirez, Hillcrest High School
  • Jasmine Simmons, W.H. Adamson High School

Erin Choi, a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School and the superintendent’s scholar with the highest GPA, received an additional $2,000 scholarship presented by the family of the late trustee Jose “Joe” May.

Sonia Gonzalez, a senior at Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School who plays soccer for Bryan Adams High School, received the $5,000 Eric Louis Brown scholarship. The Brown scholarship is presented to an outstanding district scholar-athlete.
