During his visit to Billy Earl Dade Middle School, Kevin Concannon, the U.S. Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services, said that Dallas ISD is a nationwide leader in nutrition services.

Concannon visited Dade Middle School and the district’s Central Kitchen on April 14 to see for himself how Dallas ISD is providing healthy, nutritious meals to all students. Concannon enjoyed a meal along with Dade students as part of the school’s federally funded After School Meal Program, which helps combine nutritious meals with educational and/or enrichment activities. More than 150 Dallas ISD schools participate in the After School Meal Program.

“For many children and students, the school is not only a source of learning and socialization and interaction, it’s a major source of healthy activity,” he said. “So I am thrilled to see the After School Meal Program in action.”

Concannon also praised the district’s community eligibility provision, which allows all students to get breakfast and lunch free of charge.

“This levels the playing field and allows every child to be treated the same,” Concannon said.

Olga Rosenberger, Dallas ISD director of cafeteria operations, said the district was honored to have Concannon visit. She went on to speak about the importance of the After School Meal Program.

“To have a long day of school and then be hungry, how much can you learn on an empty stomach?” she said. “For students to be able to come through, receive a hot supper, and then be able to continue with their studies really helps them concentrate and improve academically.”
