Kramer Elementary parent attests to benefits of pre-K

Pre-K Registration Week is underway in Dallas ISD, and district elementary schools are inviting parents to submit applications to enroll their child in pre-K for next school year.

Registering your child for pre-K is an opportunity that parent Brittany Brown says is too good to pass up.

Brown, whose daughter Za’naae attends pre-K at Arthur Kramer Elementary, says it’s crucial to ensure that students get the all-important academic head start that pre-K provides. She said she’s witnessed the benefits firsthand. Just since the start of school in August, Brown said her daughter has grown by leaps and bounds.

“She speaks Spanish and she’s enthusiastic about learning,” Brown said. “She’s become more independent, and she pops up out of bed when it’s time to go to school. Before, she barely even knew how to write her name. Now she knows all her letters and can count to 100.”

Brown says her child’s success has fueled her personal desire to get involved in school activities. She attends PTA meetings and parent conferences and volunteers as a coach for the school’s soccer team.

“I wanted to reach out,” Brown said. “I want to help out in any way I can. I want to go to the school and see what my child is learning.”

Brown said she could understand how some parents might feel a bit reluctant about sending their four-year-olds to school, as she was “kind of iffy” about it herself. Her concerns included how the young students would be received by their peer and whether they would adapt and learn to like school.

However, Brown now recommends Pre-K without reservations and said her concerns were not proven true.

“If you have the opportunity to get your child involved in an early education classroom, I would encourage any parent to get their child involved,” she said. “The teachers are really great. They really take time to help students learn.”
