Vanessa Sánchez, a fourth-grade student at Martin Weiss Elementary, took home first place in the National Association of Bilingual Educators (NABE) Bilingual Essay contest for grades 3–5.

Students who participated in the contest had to be enrolled in a bilingual classroom, have a B average or better, and a 90-percent attendance record. Essays were submitted in English and judged on development of the theme, originality, content and clarity of expression, grammar and mechanics.

Sánchez and her family were invited to be honored at the NABE Awards Luncheon held March 6, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Below is Sánchez’ essay:

I am Proud to be Bilingual

I am proud to be bilingual because I can speak and read in two languages. Not everyone can do that! Being bilingual will help me in the future. For example when I grow up I will be able to find a job easier than most people because I am bilingual. I live in a city that needs a lot of bilingual people. This helps me get a job faster because I am bilingual. I know that I can do more if I keep my two languages. That would make my family proud of me because I will be keeping my native language. My family wants the best for me. I am glad that I am in a dual-language classroom because it helps me become smarter. My future looks great because I will continue speaking both languages. I am glad that my big brother helps me with my English because that makes me feel special. Sometimes I think that being bilingual is something to brag about. That is why I am proud to be bilingual.
