Through March 21, three Dallas ISD students will have their artwork hanging in the same building as artists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.

Dallas ISD students Janette Davalos, Matthew Sanchez, and Jose Campos were honorable mention recipients in the Dallas Mavericks Black History Month Challenge presented by BNSF Railway. As a result, the students’ artwork is being displayed at the Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 N. Harwood St.

Davalos, Sanchez, and Campos were honored along with other award recipients on March 15. Representatives from the Dallas Museum of Art, BNSF Railway, and the Dallas Mavericks also attended the event.

“The Dallas Mavericks are proud of these DISD students for putting passion, thought and creativity into their entries and we hope to see more from them, and other DISD students, in the future,” said Katie Edwards, Director of Community Relations for the Dallas Mavericks.

The contest was open to K-12 students. The students responded with a brief essay and original artistic piece in response to the prompt: “Celebrating America: My Contributions for a Better Tomorrow!”

Below are the three pieces of artwork from Dallas ISD students that were the honorable mention recipients in the contest.

“The Soup Kitchen,” by Matthew Sanchez, a seventh-grader at W.E. Greiner Exploratory Academy.
“Every Cent Counts” by Janette Davalos, a seventh-grader at W.E. Greiner Exploratory Academy.
“Thought Bubble” by Jose Campos, an eighth-grader at W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy.
