Staff goes Red to increase awareness of heart health

Red is one of the signature colors of Valentine’s Day. With that special day of the heart just hours away, many Dallas ISD staff are wearing red today, and not just because of Valentine’s. They are wearing red in support of Go Red, the American Heart Association’s campaign to increase awareness of heart disease and stroke. Many employees made donations of $5 or more to support the cause and earn the chance to wear jeans with their red apparel.

Human Capital Management’s Rewards and Recognition Coordinator, Megan Yagelski said all employees were encouraged to sport red attire on Dallas ISD Go Red day, whether or not they made a donation. “Our goal was to combine wellness and recognition opportunities that support national initiatives,” she said. This year, a new online component allows employees to contribute through payroll deduction. Available through Oracle Self Service, this streamlined process eliminates the need for Treasury to accept cash donations. The Go Red flyer outlines the new method for making donations.

According to the Heart Association, more than 2,200 Americans die of heart disease every day. That’s one death every 39 seconds and the cause of death of one of every three women. This video, featuring actress Elizabeth Banks, outlines many of the often ignored signs of a dangerous cardiac event.

The American Heart Association’s mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
