Celebrate Black History Month

0

Throughout February, Dallas ISD is observing Black History Month. This year’s national theme, A Century of Black Life, History and Culture, not only celebrates the impact African Americans have made in history, but recognizes the important work of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, established in 1915. In 1926, the organization founded Black History Week, which later grew into Black History Month.

Schools have planned a number of events to commemorate the month. Students and staff at Edward Titche Elementary will launch a week-long celebration Feb. 16 with a focus on African-American folktales followed by a poster contest Feb. 17. Students will dress as their favorite African-American hero Feb. 18, and staff will do the same Feb. 19. The celebration will culminate with a student essay contest Feb. 23.

John B. Hood Middle School will host a Healthy Soul Food Dinner and program featuring songs, dance, and interpretations by students highlighting the Cotton Club era. The community is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased at the school.

Families across the area are invited to the African-American Read-In, 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, to celebrate literacy and African-American literature through reading activities, storytelling, and music. The event, to be held at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 1819 Martin Luther King, Blvd., will feature giveaways for participating students.
