Editor’s note: During Dallas ISD’s Winter Break, The Hub will take a look back at some of the best and most popular stories. This story was originally published on Dec. 2, 2014.

Benjamin Mackey, principal of the School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, was recently recognized at a special reception honoring Dallas ISD’s top principals. This year as part of the district’s new pay for performance initiative, Mackey was one of 184 principals who received an increase in pay under the new system that is based on a combination of performance measures and student achievement results.

With the new compensation plan, the higher the principal effectiveness, the higher the salary. On average, principals received a $9,164 increase in pay. The average salary for the 2014-2015 school year is $100,300 up from $91,136 in the 2013-2014 school year. Notably, the new system is being called one of the most rigorous principal evaluation systems in the country. The system is groundbreaking, transformative and is aimed at getting results.

The principal evaluation system, approved by the Board of Trustees in 2013, takes into account six key areas: the performance rubric, system review, improving teacher effectiveness, congruence between teacher performance and student achievement, student enrollment or student attendance and results of a parent climate survey. Student achievement data accounts for 40 percent of a principal’s effectiveness score.
