Tis the season not only to be jolly, but to be especially vigilant regarding influenza, according to health experts.

Health officials are reporting an increase in influenza cases throughout Dallas County. The flu is easily spread, so practicing good hygiene is crucial. Dallas ISD has relaunched a special website dedicated to providing great tips and resources for avoiding the flu. District health professionals also encourage you to do the following:

  • Cover your cough with a tissue or cough into your upper sleeve
  • Put your used tissue in the waste basket
  • Clean your hands often with soap and warm water or hand sanitizer
  • Take the flu vaccine as soon as possible

If you have the flu, here are five things you should do:

  • Stay at home and rest
  • Avoid close contact with well people in your house so you won’t make them sick
  • Drink plenty of water and other clear liquids to prevent fluid loss (dehydration)
  • Treat fever and cough with medicines you can buy at the store.
  • If you get very sick, are pregnant, or are 65 years or older, or are otherwise at high risk of flu-related complications, call your doctor. You might need antiviral medication.
