Editor’s note: During the Thanksgiving holiday, The Hub will take a look back at some of the best and most popular stories from our first semester. This story was originally published on Oct. 13, 2014.

It’s not news that Dallas ISD has books, but let’s talk numbers. Number of books in district libraries? 2.6 million. Number of ebooks? 13,830. Number of books checked out since the first day of school? 406,319. Dallas ISD is on a mission to encourage students and the community to read, and with the launch of the Dallas Reads! website, Dallas ISD is one step closer to achieving this goal.

So just what is so special about the new Dallas Reads! website? The new site is interactive, information rich and tailored to the needs of various age groups, including community members. In addition to videos, and tips to improve reading skills, the site also features ways for community members to become involved in the Dallas Reads! campaign and its mission to encourage students to take up a love of reading. Spanish language readers will be happy to learn the site includes a Spanish section called Leyendo Juntos.

In conjunction with the launch of the new site, the Language and Literacy Department will also kick off a new city-wide campaign entitled, “What are You Reading?” to find out what district, business and community leaders are reading this year. The goal is to demonstrate to students that reading is a life-long journey and is required to develop good leadership skills.

“The new site will be a one-stop-shop for information, research, guidance and ideas in the areas of literacy and addressing the entire child,” said Dora Morón, executive director of Language and Literacy. “The larger component is that this website is part of a comprehensive literacy plan that will engage the schools and community in learning more about reading.”
