Q&A: New provider to offer adult education classes

0

The Dallas Independent School District will no longer operate adult education program (including adult English as A Second Language) classes beginning on Dec. 31, 2014. A new provider will take over the program and provide lessons to all current students at the same locations through June 2015.

Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about the transition:

Q: Why will Dallas ISD no longer operate the adult education classes?
A: A grant from the state used to fund the classes has expired. After Dec. 31, this means the district will no longer have the resources needed to pay teachers and operate the classes.

Q: Who will offer the classes once Dallas ISD leaves?
A: Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas is currently seeking a provider to operate the program. Workforce Solutions is a local workforce-support program that administers programs including job training, workplace education, child care and educational initiatives.

Q: Will I be able to take my adult education classes at the same location?
A: All current adult education classes will take place at their current locations through June 2015. There may be some changes in the teaching staff at those locations based on the new provider.

Q: Will teachers lose their jobs as a result of this change?
A: All of the current teachers in the Dallas ISD program are funded by the grant, which expires soon. Unfortunately, this means those teachers may seek other employment. The district is hopeful that the new provider will offer opportunities to those teachers, and the district is encouraging staff to apply for current job openings in the Dallas ISD.

Q: Will I need a Social Security number to attend the new classes?
A: No. All current students will continue in the program at their current locations.

Dallas ISD will work closely with Workforce Solutions of Dallas so that students and teachers in the program feel as little disruption in their classes as possible. Everything possible is being done to ensure that all students will transition to the new program. A full transition plan is expected to be complete by Nov. 15, 2014.
