The Dallas television market just gained a new voice with the launch of the School of Business and Management’s video broadcast venture, WSBM: The Face of Townview. The program was developed as a “sister team” to KSBM Radio: The Voice of Townview, which began broadcasting over the internet on the Fishbowl Radio Network last school year.

Led by SBM teacher Rochelle Shipman, WSBM’s programming will focus on school news, academic issues, college prep tips and stories such as how to have a successful school year and do’s and don’ts of the school dress code. Once a week, the team will record and air segments called Principal’s Corner and Parent’s Corner. “Last year I enlisted a few advertising students to assist with the advertising and promotion for KSBM Radio. (School Principal) Mrs. Broughton noticed and decided we needed to add the video component. The majority of the ad team members are now WSBM team members,” shared Shipman.

Three days a week, the students plan, create, record, edit and post all video content for the channel. Viewers may access WSBM content via Facebook and YouTube, and follow the group on Twitter. Videos will also be shown on the monitor system throughout the campus.

WSBM team director, senior Deborah Carias, hopes to gain communication and speaking skills through this experience. “I believe after high school I can really utilize these skills to apply for jobs or colleges.” Carias said. My overall goal is to make sure WSBM creates opportunities for others to gain more confidence, improve speaking and team work skills, and just have fun being a part of the team.”

Shipman agreed. “One thing I found interesting and endearing – one of the students said she was taking the class to finally have a voice,” Shipman said. “I thought about what she said and I considered her personality. She is very quiet, but every day I see her having that voice. This is priceless.”
