Dallas community members and business leaders will have the opportunity to hear from Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles and Dallas ISD Board of Trustees President Miguel Solis at the 2014 State of the District luncheon.

The annual event, sponsored by the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce, is set for Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Belo Mansion. Miles and Solis will explore the milestones Dallas ISD has achieved, celebrate accomplished goals and address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The Dallas Regional Chamber has partnered with Dallas ISD for many years to host the State of the District address, as well as other activities. Dallas Regional Chamber Senior Vice President of Education Angela Farley said she believes that partnerships with the district are key to its success.

“The Dallas Regional Chamber believes it is important for the business community to partner with the Dallas ISD in many ways, including the State of the District luncheon and symposium,” said Farley. “Our desire is to help drive improvements in education to ensure students graduate with the skills they need to succeed and the business community has direct access to a talented workforce.” On Oct. 14, the Chamber will once again partner with the district for “Principal for a Day” – a program that gives business and community leaders an inside look into the roles and responsibilities of being a Dallas ISD principal.

One of the core beliefs of Destination 2020 is Engaging the Community, and the opportunity to partner with the Chamber on the State of the District address is a key element in continuing to bolster community support for students. “The State of the District luncheon gives us the opportunity to share with stakeholders the milestones that are being achieved in Dallas ISD and the opportunities that we have for growth,” Miles said. “We want to sincerely thank the Dallas Regional Chamber for its continued support and partnership as we work together to prepare all students to be college and career ready.”

Two new features have been added to this year’s State of the District luncheon. The first is an opportunity for attendees to visit with Dallas ISD high school students prior to the start of the luncheon, and learn about the impact that the district’s Career and Technical Education (CATE) program is making in their lives.

Following the luncheon, the Chamber will host a symposium featuring Dr. Steve Rivkin, a nationally recognized economist from the University of Illinois-Chicago. Dr. Rivkin will address education reform and how it impacts the future of the workforce pipeline. After Dr. Rivkins’ presentation, a panel discussion comprising business and policy leaders will be moderated by Superintendent Miles.
